Barbentane is a Provençal village in the Bouches-du-Rhône, at the foot of the Montagnette near the confluence of the Rhône and the Durance. A warm base for Avignon, the Alpilles and Saint-Rémy-de-Provence.
Barbentane sits in the north of the Bouches-du-Rhône (Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur), in the Communauté d'agglomération Terre de Provence, at the foot of the Montagnette near the confluence of the Rhône and the Durance. The medieval centre opens through the porte Calendale and the porte du Séquier. Above the village rises the Tour Anglica (1365, about 28 metres high), built for Cardinal Anglic de Grimoard, brother of pope Urban V; exterior viewing only. In the centre you find the Romanesque church of Notre-Dame-des-Grâces (12th century; bell tower and porch listed historic monuments) and the Maison des Chevaliers (from 1133, with a Renaissance façade). The 17th-century Château de Barbentane, sometimes called a petit Trianon, is private and visible only from outside. In the Montagnette, on Tarascon territory, stands the abbey of Saint-Michel de Frigolet. Walking and cycling through the Montagnette pine woods, plus day trips to Avignon, Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, the Alpilles and Arles, are close at hand. A calm, warm base for villa guests combining heritage, river landscapes and Provence.
