Roussillon is a famous ochre village in the Vaucluse, in the heart of the Luberon, with yellow, orange and red façades. A Plus Beau Village, with the Sentier des Ocres and the Ôkhra ecomuseum, it makes a warm base between Apt and Gordes.
Roussillon sits in the Vaucluse (Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur), in the Parc naturel régional du Luberon, and is one of the Plus Beaux Villages de France. The village owes its look to ochre: yellow, orange and red façades, narrow lanes, the beffroi and the church of Saint-Michel. On the edge of the village, the Sentier des Ocres winds through former quarries, with two walking loops (about 30 or 50 minutes) among colourful cliffs. Nearby, Ôkhra, the Écomusée de l’ocre (former Usine Mathieu), tells the story of pigment and colour. Higher up, an orientation table looks out to the Monts de Vaucluse and Mont Ventoux; the Fontaine des Naïades recalls the old wash house. The market is on Thursday morning. The Colorado Provençal at Rustrel and neighbouring villages such as Gordes and Bonnieux are close by. A colourful rural base for villa guests combining ochre landscapes, Luberon villages and Provence.
